Construction Begins on New Hazel Trembath Elementary in Coquitlam Following Fire

The new Hazel Trembath Elementary school in Coquitlam is set to replace the former school lost to a fire in October 2023, with a projected opening in December 2027.

Construction has officially commenced on the new Hazel Trembath Elementary school in Coquitlam, B.C., which is set to replace the previous structure that was tragically destroyed by a fire in October 2023. Mike Farnworth, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Port-Coquitlam, expressed the community's deep sense of loss due to the fire and emphasized the significance of the new construction, stating, "The loss of Hazel Trembath Elementary was deeply felt by students, families and the entire community, which is why it is so meaningful to see construction begin on its replacement." He highlighted that this new educational facility, along with other ongoing school projects in the district, aims to provide students with safe and welcoming environments conducive to their development.
The new Hazel Trembath Elementary will employ a "first-in-B.C." hybrid-construction method, an innovative approach designed to expedite the completion of the school. This facility will accommodate 240 students and will feature a neighbourhood learning centre intended for future child care services. The provincial government is allocating $39 million towards the construction of this new school, which is anticipated to open its doors in December 2027.
In conjunction with the Hazel Trembath project, a new addition has recently been completed at École Dr. Charles Best Secondary. This expansion provides educational programming for Grades 9 to 12 in the Ranch Park area of Coquitlam. The newly constructed two-storey addition boasts 300 new seats within 12 classrooms and has been built to meet LEED Gold standards, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. The province has contributed $18 million for this secondary school project.
Since 2017, the British Columbia government has been actively investing in the Coquitlam School District, supporting 11 capital projects to enhance educational infrastructure. Out of these, eight projects have been completed, including the recent addition at École Dr. Charles Best Secondary. Currently, three significant projects are underway: the replacement of Hazel Trembath Elementary, the seismic replacement of Montgomery Middle School, and the new Burke Mountain Secondary, which is also scheduled to open in 2027.
