The City of Toronto has officially launched the Building Permit Application Pre-Check, an innovative online tool designed to assist applicants in identifying potential issues related to building permit applications prior to their formal submission to the city. This new initiative, which employs artificial intelligence, responds to the challenges posed by incomplete applications that can significantly slow down the review process for both applicants and city staff.
According to a recent announcement, the primary goal of this pilot program is to minimize unnecessary resubmissions, expedite the initial review process, and further the city’s efforts to enhance housing approvals. By utilizing this tool, applicants are able to upload their application documents and receive immediate feedback regarding omitted, incomplete, or inconsistent information. The tool also addresses certain zoning or Ontario Building Code-related issues that fall within the scope of the pilot.
The mechanism behind the tool generates a findings report that applicants can utilize to rectify or clarify any flagged items before they formally submit their applications for a comprehensive review by city officials. The pilot program is set to run for a duration of one year and is currently applicable to specific projects dealing with residential buildings that contain two units or fewer.
