In the historic Railyards district of downtown Sacramento, California, heavy equipment operators have commenced work on the Republic Stadium, a new Major League Soccer venue. This landmark, soccer-specific stadium is projected to be the largest professional sports and entertainment arena in the area, boasting a capacity of 20,000 seats. Located at 11 7th St, Sacramento, CA 95811, the stadium is part of a broader $350 million project that signifies a major transformation for the city’s core.
The Republic Stadium is being constructed on a 31-acre site that holds ancestral significance for the Wilton Rancheria tribal nation, who are the owners of the Sacramento Republic FC of the United Soccer League. This project not only symbolizes a pivotal moment for the soccer club but also marks the redevelopment of an area that has remained largely unused for decades.
As of late 2025, preparatory work on the site was completed, and construction crews are now engaged in the installation of vital infrastructure components, including underground utilities, storm drainage systems, and new roadway constructions. These preliminary enhancements are essential prior to progressing to the foundation and vertical construction phases of the stadium.
Beyond soccer matches, the stadium is designed to accommodate up to 27,000 guests for concerts, festivals, and other special events. The project will feature a striking roof supported by four massive steel trusses, which together will weigh approximately 3,800 tons. Once in place, these trusses are anticipated to become a prominent feature of the Sacramento skyline.
Wilton Rancheria chairman, Jesus Tarango, expressed pride in the project, stating, "This stadium is reclaiming our space and matching the ambition of the region." He emphasized the importance of delivering a stadium that serves as a community hub and a place for future growth.
Chris Franklin, COO for Wilton Rancheria, highlighted the decision to construct a full-sized stadium from the outset, reflecting confidence in the club's popularity and Sacramento's emergence as a sports and entertainment hotspot. He noted, "Building bigger is a catalytic investment in the long-term transformation of downtown Sacramento."
A notable element of the stadium will be its comprehensive roof canopy, which aims to protect fans from the intense summer sun while maintaining an open-air feel. The design includes features to enhance airflow and comfort, reducing the need for mechanical cooling systems. The seating arrangement, which has been thoughtfully configured, will ensure that spectators are close to the action, creating a vibrant atmosphere for attendees.
The stadium is also set to offer various premium experiences, including luxury suites and a dedicated supporters' section for approximately 1,500 standing fans. The concourse will feature a diverse range of amenities, including a supporters' plaza and retail spaces. Additionally, advanced technology is planned to enhance the fan experience, including large video boards for game presentations.
This ambitious stadium project is part of a larger multibillion-dollar redevelopment effort aimed at creating a new downtown neighborhood. Future developments in the surrounding area are expected to include housing, hotels, retail spaces, and community amenities. The Wilton Rancheria officials view this endeavor as both an economic development project and a cultural reconnection to their ancestral lands.
Republic FC managing partner Kevin Nagle remarked, "For years, we have known what our fans deserve and what this region is capable of supporting." He emphasized that the response to the groundbreaking has affirmed the community's readiness for a state-of-the-art venue that meets their expectations. Construction is slated to continue through 2027, with the stadium completion anticipated in 2028.
