The project, which has an estimated budget of $125 million, aims to enhance the gallery's facilities by adding 60 percent more space dedicated to exhibitions, education, conservation, and public programming, alongside modernizing the existing infrastructure.
Originally, the gallery was the private residence of art enthusiasts Signe and Robert McMichael, who initiated their collection of artworks by the Group of Seven shortly after their marriage. In 1965, the couple generously donated their property, which features a mid-century building and the art collection, to the provincial government. The forthcoming redevelopment is designed to preserve the original low roofline and the timber-and-stone construction style that characterizes the McMichael home.
During the renovation period, the gallery has assured that a substantial portion of its collection will remain accessible to the public. This will be facilitated by a touring exhibition, which will showcase the artworks across Canada and internationally.
Funding for the renovation has been secured from multiple sources, including a $50 million contribution from the provincial government, a $25 million investment from the federal government, and an additional $50 million from private donors. This financial backing underscores the significance of the project not only for the gallery but also for the cultural landscape of Canada, as it aims to elevate the profile of Canadian art and heritage through enhanced facilities and programming.
