Ontario Completes Major Upgrades at Bloor GO/UP Station

The Ontario government has finalized significant enhancements to the Bloor GO/UP Station, aimed at improving capacity and community access.

The Ontario government has officially completed substantial upgrades at the Bloor GO/UP Station, enhancing the transit infrastructure in Toronto. The improvements, highlighted in a recent announcement, include the installation of new GO rail tracks to bolster future capacity on the Kitchener Line. Approximately 2.5 kilometers of new track have been laid, expanding the rail corridor to four tracks between Dupont Street and Lansdowne Avenue, which is expected to facilitate increased train operations in the future.
In addition to the track upgrades, several other enhancements have been made to improve accessibility and community engagement. A new pedestrian tunnel and a covered pavilion have been constructed, linking the station to Randolph Avenue. Furthermore, a new park on Ernest Avenue has been created, offering the local community a revitalized public space accessible year-round.
To address noise and safety concerns, a noise barrier, retaining wall, and a taller fence have been installed along the west side of the Bloor Street West pedestrian bridge, as stated in a release from the government.
Earlier this month, on July 6, the Ontario government announced an extension of GO train service on the Kitchener Line to Stratford, marking a significant step in expanding regional transit options. This initiative follows an agreement-in-principle reached last year with CN Rail, which allowed the province to acquire over 20 kilometers of land in the Halton subdivision. This acquisition has led to the introduction of weekend service for the first time between Kitchener and Toronto.
Multiple projects are currently underway on the Kitchener Line, including the installation of an additional fourth track and modifications to various bridges and station platforms. The culmination of these efforts is expected to significantly reduce travel times; upon completion, the journey from Kitchener to Union Station will be shortened from 111 minutes to just 98 minutes.
These upgrades at Bloor GO/UP Station and the enhancements along the Kitchener Line reflect the Ontario government’s commitment to improving public transit infrastructure, increasing capacity, and providing better connectivity for commuters in the region.
