Prime Minister Designates Pacific Link Pipeline as National Interest Project

The Pacific Link pipeline, aimed at transporting crude oil from Alberta to British Columbia, has been designated as a project of national interest under the Building Canada Act, with significant investment and Indigenous community participation.

FORT MCMURRAY, ALTA. β€” In a significant development for Canada's energy sector, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that the Pacific Link oil pipeline has received the first national interest designation under the Building Canada Act. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on Thursday in Fort McMurray, a central hub for Alberta's oilsands. Carney emphasized the importance of this day for both Alberta and Canada, stating, "This is an important day for Alberta and for Canada." The Pacific Link pipeline is set to play a crucial role in transporting crude oil, with plans to carry over one million barrels per day from Bruderheim, Alberta, to a port near Delta, British Columbia, facilitating shipments to international markets. The project is estimated to cost between $35.2 billion and $43.7 billion. The funding for this ambitious project will be shared between Trans Mountain Corp., a federal Crown corporation, and the Alberta government. Additionally, Indigenous communities will have the opportunity to acquire a minimum of 10 percent ownership interest in the pipeline, with financing options available through federal and provincial loan programs. Pembina Pipeline Corporation is also stepping in as a private sector investor, bringing its expertise to the project’s development. The federal major projects office is tasked with finalizing the conditions for the project, which are expected to be completed by September 1, 2027.
