The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station in Ontario is set to undergo a significant refurbishment, aiming to extend its operational life and meet the province's electricity demands.

In Pickering, Ontario, a substantial refurbishment project has commenced today at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, aligning with Premier Doug Ford’s administration's strategy to heavily invest in nuclear energy to address the rising electricity requirements of the province. Four reactors at the facility are beginning to come offline as part of this initiative, with refurbishment work anticipated to commence in January. The total cost of the refurbishment is estimated at a staggering $26.8 billion, and the project is expected to take the reactors out of service for nearly a decade. Upon completion, the refurbishment is projected to extend the operational lifespan of the plant by up to 38 years, generating sufficient electricity to power approximately 2.2 million homes. This extensive undertaking involves significant upgrades, including the replacement of 1,520 fuel channels and 48 boilers, along with the construction of a 1.5-kilometre deep-water intake. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce has highlighted that this initiative is set to create around 30,500 jobs, with a focus on ensuring that most of the expenses remain within Ontario. However, the project has attracted criticism from environmental advocates. Environmental Defence has voiced concerns that the extended offline period for Pickering's reactors could lead to an increased dependency on natural gas for electricity generation in the province, consequently elevating greenhouse gas emissions during this transition period.
