Public Invited to Review Proposed Changes to Canada's National Model Codes

The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes is seeking public input on proposed updates to the National Model Codes, focusing on accessibility, energy efficiency, and more.

OTTAWA – The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) is inviting public engagement for its upcoming fall review concerning proposed updates to the 2025 editions of Canada’s National Model Codes. This initiative aims to gather feedback on several pivotal topics that affect construction standards across the country.
Among the proposed changes are enhancements related to accessibility, ensuring that buildings are more inclusive for all individuals. Additionally, updates concerning conformity assessments are being considered to streamline the process for ensuring compliance with the codes. Another critical area of focus is energy efficiency, specifically for residential housing, which aims to promote sustainable building practices.
The proposed revisions also address the handling of flammable and combustible liquids, an essential safety consideration in construction and building management. Further, the mitigation of radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can pose health risks, is being included in the updates to ensure safer indoor environments.
Structural design updates, particularly pertaining to Part 9 of the codes, will also be part of this public review, indicating a commitment to enhancing the safety and integrity of building structures. Moreover, the review will include updates to referenced documents that guide the application of these codes.
The public review period is scheduled to commence on December 21, during which interested parties can access the proposed changes via the CBHCC website. Feedback from stakeholders and the general public will be crucial in shaping the final recommendations. Following the review, comments will be evaluated by the appropriate code development committees, who will then propose changes to the CBHCC for approval.
Once finalized, the approved modifications will be integrated into the 2030 editions of the codes. These updates will be available for provinces and territories to adopt or adapt into their respective construction regulations, thereby influencing building practices across Canada significantly.
This initiative by the CBHCC underscores the importance of public participation in the development of construction standards, ensuring that the codes evolve to meet contemporary needs and challenges within the construction sector.
