Mayor Olivia Chow and community leaders inaugurate Santo Domingo Baseball Diamond in Toronto, honoring the Dominican community's impact on baseball.

On July 25, 2026, Mayor Olivia Chow, alongside Deputy Mayor Mike Colle, community leaders, and representatives from the Dominican Republic, celebrated the inauguration of the Santo Domingo Baseball Diamond at Caledonia Park. This event served as the City of Toronto's formal recognition of the diamond's commemorative naming and highlighted the significant contributions of the Dominican community to both baseball and the cultural fabric of Toronto. The celebration also emphasized the strong cultural connections between Toronto and Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
The ceremony was attended by Lucilo Santos, Consul General of the Dominican Republic in Toronto, and members of the Afro Dominicana Community Organization. During the festivities, Mayor Chow acknowledged the organization’s efforts by presenting a scroll as a token of appreciation for their leadership in uniting the community for this special occasion.
The Santo Domingo Baseball Diamond stands as a tribute to the enduring influence of Dominican baseball in Toronto. It recognizes the achievements of renowned former Toronto Blue Jays players such as Tony Fernández, George Bell, and Alfredo Griffin, along with the countless coaches, volunteers, families, and amateur athletes who have contributed to the sport's growth in the city.
The timing of the inauguration coincides with the Toronto Blue Jays' 50th season, offering a unique opportunity to reflect on the vital role that Dominican players have played in the team's history and in fostering a deep-rooted passion for baseball among Toronto's residents. Mayor Chow remarked, "Baseball has brought generations of Torontonians together, and the Santo Domingo Baseball Diamond is a wonderful tribute to the Dominican community’s lasting contributions to the sport and our city. This diamond celebrates the players who inspired us, as well as the coaches, volunteers, families, and young athletes who continue to build Toronto’s baseball community. I am proud to formally inaugurate this special space and celebrate the strong friendship between Toronto and Santo Domingo."
