Toronto Commemorates Veterans' Week with Special Events and Ceremonies

Toronto honors Veterans' Week from November 5 to 11, 2026, featuring ceremonies, exhibits, and commemorations including the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion.

The City of Toronto is set to observe Veterans' Week from November 5 to November 11, 2026, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by those who have served in the Canadian military. This year's events are particularly significant as they celebrate the centenary of the Royal Canadian Legion, an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.
Kicking off the commemorations on November 5, an illuminated poppy will be installed on the Toronto Sign at Nathan Phillips Square. This gesture is in support of the Royal Canadian Legion’s National Poppy Campaign, marking its 100th anniversary, with the Toronto Sign also illuminated in red to honor the occasion.
Throughout the week, the 'Toronto Remembers' exhibit will be on display, featuring panels that highlight key military and peacekeeping milestones that have shaped Toronto’s history. This installation, created in partnership with Metrolinx, will be showcased in the Rotunda at Toronto City Hall and along the construction fencing at the intersection of Queen Street West and Bay Street.
On November 8, the city will observe Indigenous Veterans Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the contributions of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and non-status Indigenous veterans. A ceremony will take place at the Spirit Garden in Nathan Phillips Square, which will include traditional remembrance practices such as a Sacred Fire led by Young Spiritual Elder Noodjmowin and a Sharing Circle. Mayor Olivia Chow will officially proclaim November 8 as Indigenous Veterans Day, and the Toronto Sign will be lit in the four colors of the Medicine Wheel—red, white, yellow, and black.
The culmination of Veterans' Week will occur on November 11, with Remembrance Day ceremonies commencing at 10:45 a.m. across various locations in Toronto, including the Old City Hall Cenotaph and the Scarborough War Memorial. The ceremony at Old City Hall will be streamed live on the City’s YouTube channel and its Remembrance Day Ceremonies webpage for public viewing.
To ensure public safety during the ceremonies, the city will implement road closures and transit diversions around Old City Hall. Notably, Bay Street will be closed from Albert Street to Richmond Street West, and Queen Street West will be closed from Bay Street to east of York Street. Members of the public are encouraged to approach Old City Hall from the west and utilize the Osgoode Subway Station on Line 1.
Additionally, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will observe a moment of remembrance on November 11, as all vehicles will pause for two minutes at 11 a.m., where operationally feasible.
Mayor Olivia Chow emphasized the importance of Veterans' Week, stating, "During Veterans’ Week, Torontonians honor the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who have served our country. This year, we recognize a century of dedication to supporting veterans and making sure the legacies of those who served are never forgotten by commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion. I encourage all Torontonians to reflect on the sacrifices made in service to our country by attending a ceremony, observing a moment of silence, wearing a poppy, or sharing a message of gratitude."
Toronto, a city of over three million residents known for its diversity and economic strength, remains committed to honoring the contributions of those who have served in the military, ensuring that their sacrifices are remembered and celebrated throughout the community.
