Uniper Secures Long-Term LNG Supply from Ksi Lisims Project in British Columbia

Uniper has signed a significant agreement to purchase liquefied natural gas from the Ksi Lisims project in British Columbia, marking a pivotal deal in Canada-Germany energy relations.

In a significant development for the energy sector, German utility company Uniper has announced a long-term agreement to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Ksi Lisims project, which is set to be developed on the northern coast of British Columbia. According to a joint news release from Uniper and Ksi Lisims LNG, the agreement entails the purchase of two million tonnes of LNG each year over a period of up to 20 years, with the initial deliveries projected to commence in 2032. This agreement signifies the first major long-term LNG supply contract between Canada and Germany, highlighting the strengthening of energy ties between the two nations.
The agreement follows a letter of interest signed last month, which outlined the key commercial terms leading to this finalized supply and purchase agreement announced on Wednesday. The Ksi Lisims project is being spearheaded by Houston-based Western LNG, which will serve as the lead developer and future operator. The project also involves Rockies LNG, a consortium of Canadian natural gas producers, and the Nisga’a Nation, who will host the $10-billion project on their lands.
The Ksi Lisims project is poised to play a significant role in the LNG market, with plans to export up to 12 million tonnes of LNG annually from its proposed floating plant located on Pearse Island, near the Alaska border. Uniper, which boasts an impressive power generating capacity of 18.5 gigawatts, is recognized as a major importer of LNG in northwestern Europe. The company was nationalized by the German government during the energy crisis that ensued following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and it is currently in the process of being privatized.
This agreement not only represents a landmark moment for Uniper but also underscores the growing importance of LNG in the global energy landscape, particularly in light of shifting geopolitical dynamics and the urgent need for energy diversification in Europe.
