EDMONTON — The Alberta government has announced a substantial investment of $25.8 million aimed at supporting six independent school projects, which will ultimately result in the creation of over 3,500 new classroom spaces throughout the province. This initiative includes a combination of new school constructions, expansions of existing facilities, and modular classrooms in key locations such as Calgary, Edmonton, and central Alberta. According to a government release, the funding through the Independent School Capital program is expected to catalyze an additional $108 million in investments from independent school authorities and community partners, culminating in a total capital construction value of more than $134 million. The projects funded by this initiative encompass a variety of expansions and new builds across several institutions. Notable projects include the Phase 3 expansion at Bearspaw Christian School in Calgary, which receives $1.8 million to create 300 new student spaces. The Phase 4 expansion at the same school is set to receive $6.1 million for an even larger increase of 1,072 student spaces. Additionally, the Third Academy in Calgary will benefit from a modular expansion valued at $666,667, aimed at providing 80 student spaces specifically for students with specialized educational needs.
Other projects include the Khalsa School in Calgary, which is slated for an expansion costing $3.3 million to create 300 student spaces, and the Edmonton Islamic Academy’s Elementary Campus, which is currently under construction with a projected value of $10 million to accommodate 1,700 students. Moreover, the Lighthouse Christian Academy located in Sylvan Lake and Lacombe County is set to construct a new facility at a cost of $4 million, adding 126 net new student spaces.
The Alberta government has indicated that independent schools will have further opportunities to apply for funding in the coming years, with additional intakes planned for 2027 and 2028. The budget for these future intakes includes $25 million available in 2027-28 and $30 million in 2028-29. Eligible projects for this funding will range from new constructions and school expansions to modular classrooms, building purchases, and leasehold improvements.
This initiative builds upon the already extensive $10.8-billion Schools Now program, which aims to construct and renovate over 100 public schools across Alberta, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities in the province.
