Bow Valley College is set to create a new Health Care Centre of Excellence in downtown Calgary, supported by a $5 million grant from the Alberta government, aiming to enhance healthcare education and capacity.
CALGARY, ALTA. – Bow Valley College has announced its intention to establish a new Health Care Centre of Excellence in downtown Calgary. This significant initiative follows a $5 million grant awarded by the Government of Alberta to support the planning and development stages of the project. As part of the plan, the college is currently engaged in negotiations with the City of Calgary to acquire Block 40, which encompasses the former W.R. Castell Central Library and the decommissioned Calgary Police Service arrest processing building. The college has expressed its commitment to renovating these existing structures instead of opting for demolition, which will ultimately create approximately 316,000 square feet dedicated to health care education, research, and innovation. Dr. Misheck Mwaba, president and CEO of Bow Valley College, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This is a major step toward training more of the health care professionals Alberta needs. Giving these buildings a second life is the most responsible way to get there. It saves money, keeps a downtown landmark standing, and puts thousands more future nurses, health care aides, and pharmacy technicians in the heart of Calgary." The expansion is projected to enable the college to accommodate about 11,000 full load equivalents in health care programs by the academic year 2035-36, marking an increase of nearly 5,300 students compared to the current capacity without the new facility. The first intake of students is anticipated for September 2031. Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas commented on the project, noting, "Putting this landmark block back to work is the kind of practical result Calgarians expect. Thousands more students downtown every day will bring life to our streets, and more health care graduates will make for a stronger city. We look forward to working with Bow Valley College on the next steps."
