Recently, the Ontario government, led by Premier Doug Ford and his Progressive Conservative party, passed legislation that enables it to assume the City of Toronto's position in a tripartite agreement governing operations at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This agreement now includes the province, the federal government, and the Toronto Port Authority, which operates as a federal agency.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has yet to express a definitive stance on the proposed expansion but has committed to conducting extensive consultations regarding the matter. Transportation Minister Steven MacKinnon, alongside other Toronto Liberal MPs, has maintained a neutral position publicly about the expansion plans.
To facilitate public input, Transport Canada has opened a consultation process, allowing Canadians to share their thoughts either online or via mail until July 24.
