The Canadian federal government is set to invest $2.7 billion over the next three years to construct over 18 housing projects in Toronto, aiming to create more than 5,600 rental homes, with a focus on affordability.

OTTAWA — In a significant move to address Toronto's housing crisis, the federal government has announced an investment of at least $2.7 billion to support the construction of more than 18 housing projects across the city. During a media event on Wednesday with Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, Prime Minister Mark Carney detailed the government's commitment to allocate these funds over the next three years. He indicated that the initiative will result in the creation of over 5,600 new rental homes, with a minimum of 1,800 designated as affordable or rent-controlled.
Prime Minister Carney emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that construction on approximately 4,500 of these new homes is expected to commence by the end of the year. "For decades, the simple fact is Toronto didn’t build enough housing and too much of what was built was unaffordable for most Torontonians," he remarked. Carney attributed the high housing prices to various factors, including development charges, taxes, escalating construction costs, and a shortage of available land. He asserted that the most effective way to tackle the challenges faced is to increase housing supply and accelerate construction.
In a related development, earlier this month, the federal government dismissed a proposal to expand the city’s airport to accommodate jet traffic. This decision has prompted Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government to reassess its backing of the Alto project, which focuses on high-speed rail development. At the event, Prime Minister Carney humorously noted a technical glitch with his TelePrompTer, distinguishing his approach from that of a "certain world leader," which elicited laughter from the audience.
Mayor Chow echoed the sentiment for immediate action, stressing that Toronto requires housing solutions "right now." She highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, "We’re moving with urgency because people running out of rent money at the end of the month cannot wait." This collaborative effort between federal and municipal leaders marks a critical step towards alleviating the pressing housing shortages in Toronto.
