Gordie Howe International Bridge Ribbon-Cutting Scheduled Amid Ongoing Negotiations

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Ontario and Michigan, is set for Friday, as stakeholders await final approvals for the project.

In Washington, preparations are underway for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a long-anticipated connection between Ontario and Michigan. According to a source familiar with the arrangements, although details remain tentative, the event is currently scheduled for Friday. Reports from the Detroit Free Press indicate that both Governor Gretchen Whitmer and former Governor Rick Snyder are expected to attend the ceremony. However, the exact date for when the bridge will be open to traffic remains unclear.
This ribbon-cutting marks a significant milestone for the bridge project, especially following U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments in February that the U.S. would need to be compensated prior to the bridge’s opening. Shortly thereafter, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney communicated with Trump, expressing optimism about resolving the issue. Officials from both Whitmer’s and Canadian Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson’s offices have directed inquiries to the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority for further comments.
Tara Carson, the authority’s director of communication, noted in an email that the project team is making good progress towards a planned opening in spring for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is deemed a crucial economic link between the two nations. Carson assured that additional updates would be provided soon.
The Gordie Howe Bridge project advanced after a deal was signed in 2012 between Ottawa and Snyder, wherein Canada agreed to cover construction costs and recover the investment through tolls, with the revenue to be shared with the state of Michigan. The ownership of the bridge is jointly held by Michigan and the Canadian government.
The project has faced considerable opposition from the Moroun family, owners of the competing Ambassador Bridge. Recent investigations by House Democrats are examining whether the Moroun family has attempted to obstruct the Gordie Howe bridge’s opening. Reports from The New York Times revealed that Matthew Moroun met with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just prior to Trump’s critical social media post regarding the bridge. Rep. Robert Garcia, the leading Democrat on the House oversight committee, expressed concerns about wealthy donors influencing economic policies through clandestine meetings with administration officials.
The investigation has prompted Democrats to request that Lutnick and Moroun provide documents related to their meeting and other communications with the White House concerning the bridge. Furthermore, they have demanded records regarding any donations or payments made by the Moroun family to the Trump campaign and affiliated political action committees.
Named after the iconic Canadian hockey player Gordie Howe, who was instrumental in the Detroit Red Wings' four Stanley Cup victories, the bridge's construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony in 2018 but has encountered several delays. During a recent Senate hearing, Democratic Senator Gary Peters of Michigan queried Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin about the readiness of U.S. Customs and Border Protection for operations at the bridge. Mullin indicated that personnel are prepared, although a contractor has yet to finalize essential approvals, despite a May 1 deadline.
While Mullin confirmed that staffing is adequate and preparations are in place, he acknowledged that ongoing negotiations between Canada and the United States, which fall outside his department's purview, must be resolved before the bridge can officially open.
