Guelph Breaks Ground on New Transit and Fleet Services Facility

The City of Guelph has commenced construction on a new transit and fleet services facility aimed at supporting its electric bus fleet, backed by significant funding from federal and provincial governments.

In Guelph, Ontario, significant progress is underway as the city has officially broken ground on a new transit and fleet services facility, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing its public transportation infrastructure. The project, located at 80 Dunlop Drive, is part of an extensive initiative to improve the storage and charging capabilities for Guelph's electric buses and other fleet vehicles. With an expected completion date set for 2030, this facility is anticipated to cover an impressive area of approximately 280,000 square feet. It is designed to not only meet but exceed current building standards, with a focus on achieving Zero Carbon Building Design standards, as outlined in a recent release by the city. Leading the construction efforts is PCL Constructors, a prominent player in the construction industry, while Stantec serves as the prime consultant and Strasman Architects is responsible for the architectural design of the facility. Financially, the project is supported by the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, which has allocated a total of $77 million in funding. This includes a contribution of $35 million from the Government of Ontario and an additional $42 million from the Government of Canada. The funding aims to bolster Guelph's capacity to store and charge its bus fleet, reflecting a broader commitment to sustainable public transportation solutions. The groundbreaking of this facility is a crucial development in the city’s infrastructure plans, reinforcing Guelph's dedication to modernizing its transit services while addressing environmental concerns.
