Ontario Invests $3.9 Million in Training Programs for Women Survivors of Domestic Violence

The Ontario government allocates nearly $3.9 million to support women, particularly survivors of domestic violence, in training for skilled trades, following an audit revealing issues in fund allocation.

In a significant initiative aimed at empowering women, particularly those who have experienced domestic violence, the Ontario government has announced an investment of nearly $3.9 million across four training projects focused on in-demand skilled trades. A substantial portion of this funding, sourced from the Skills Development Fund, is directed towards the Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region, which will assist 42 women who are survivors of gender-based violence in training for careers as carpenters and machine mechanics, among other skilled trades.
This funding comes in the wake of a critical audit released in October 2025, which highlighted serious shortcomings in the fund's selection process, deeming it neither fair nor transparent. The province's auditor general noted that the Labour Minister David Piccini's office played a significant role in the funding decisions, which involved granting funds to applications that were ranked low without clear justification. Alarmingly, this included support for numerous organizations that had engaged lobbyists.
In response to these findings, the Ontario government has introduced new oversight measures aimed at enhancing the integrity of the Skills Development Fund, which totals $2.5 billion. The updated protocols include mandatory disclosures for lobbyists and a more stringent evaluation process for project applications.
Among the notable recipients of this funding is a Toronto-based emergency shelter, which has received over $900,000 to facilitate training for 100 survivors of gender-based violence. This program will prepare participants for careers as HVAC technicians, gas fitters, and other construction-related trades, further supporting the province’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence through economic empowerment.
The government's proactive move to bolster support for women in skilled trades aligns with broader efforts to increase diversity and inclusion within the construction sector.
