In a significant move to bolster affordable housing in Oshawa, the federal and Ontario governments have announced a joint investment of about $41 million directed towards two housing projects in the city. This funding is anticipated to not only support the immediate construction of housing units but also serve as a crucial example of how to transition affordable housing from mere proposals to actual developments on the ground. John Fox, a partner in the Commercial Real Estate and Development Group at Robins Appleby and a prominent figure in the firm’s Affordable and Social Housing Group, emphasized that this investment is an essential step in the right direction. It highlights a practical approach to addressing the critical need for affordable housing in the region, offering a potential blueprint that could be replicated in other areas facing similar challenges. The first of the two projects, located at 1707 Ritson Road North, will feature 66 units of stacked and back-to-back townhouses. This initiative is being operated by the Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation (DRNPHC) and developed by The Daniels Corporation. The financial backing for this project comprises over $7 million sourced from the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative and the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative. Additionally, a substantial investment of $27.5 million from the federal government’s Affordable Housing Fund further supports this development. The second project, named Conant Place, is set to be a 54-unit affordable rental building at 1050 Simcoe Street South, also under the management of DRNPHC. This building is strategically aimed at alleviating the waiting list for rental housing among seniors in the area, thereby addressing a pressing demographic need. The combined efforts of the provincial and federal governments, alongside the initiatives by local organizations, underscore a collaborative approach to resolving the housing crisis in Oshawa.
