Saskatchewan Seeks Federal Funding for Major Infrastructure Projects

The Government of Saskatchewan has urged the federal government to invest in three key infrastructure projects aimed at fostering economic development and enhancing community resilience.

In Regina, the Government of Saskatchewan has formally requested the federal government to allocate funds for three significant infrastructure initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of expanding communities, generating new economic opportunities, and providing long-term advantages for the regions involved. Premier Scott Moe sent a letter to Minister Gregor Robertson, who oversees Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, endorsing the following projects that are seeking financial support from the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF) – Direct Delivery Stream: 1. The Downtown Event and Entertainment District (DEED) in Saskatoon, 2. The Prince Albert Convention and Cultural Event Centre, 3. The Battlefords Arena and Event Centre located in North Battleford.
The Government of Saskatchewan has expressed its willingness to match federal contributions for these projects, committing to cover up to one-third of the eligible costs, contingent upon the approval of funding. Although participation from the provincial government is not a prerequisite under the BCSF – Direct Delivery Stream, Saskatchewan is eager to play an active role in advancing these initiatives.
Premier Moe emphasized that these infrastructure projects align with common priorities shared between Saskatchewan and the federal government, notably economic growth and community resilience. He stated, "We encourage the federal government to work with Saskatchewan and these municipalities to bring these transformational investments to life."
The anticipated projects are expected to provide considerable regional and provincial benefits, bolstering economic development, enhancing housing and tourism prospects, and offering facilities that can be utilized for emergency responses during natural disasters and other crises. The provincial support pledged for these initiatives will not interfere with other municipal project submissions from Saskatchewan under the BCSF-Provincial and Territorial Stream.
Currently, negotiations are ongoing between the provincial and federal governments to secure funding through this program, with the potential to significantly impact the local communities involved and the broader Saskatchewan economy.
