West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. has reported a significant increase in losses for Q2, driven by declining sales and impending U.S. tariffs on Canadian wood products.
VANCOUVER — West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd., a prominent player in the wood products sector based in Vancouver, has announced a loss of US$61 million for the second quarter of the year. This is a notable increase from the US$24 million loss reported during the same period last year. The losses equate to 78 cents U.S. per diluted share, which is a decline from the previous year's loss of 38 cents U.S. per diluted share. The company's sales figures during this quarter amounted to US$1.43 billion, down from US$1.53 billion in the second quarter of the previous year, indicating a challenging market environment for the firm.In a further complication for the company, the U.S. government has recently revealed plans to impose a substantial 50 per cent tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods, particularly affecting various types of plywood, paper, and other wood-derived products. This tariff is scheduled to take effect on August 19. West Fraser is actively monitoring the implications of these tariffs and their potential impact on its operations and financial health.
CEO Sean McLaren has expressed a cautiously optimistic view regarding the long-term prospects for residential construction in the U.S., citing a significant housing supply deficit as a driving factor. Despite the immediate financial challenges posed by the tariff and the decline in sales, McLaren believes that the underlying demand for housing will support a rebound in the sector over time. The company continues to navigate these turbulent waters while keeping an eye on legislative developments that could affect its business model and market strategy.
