Aecon Group Inc. and Arctic Gateway Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening Canada's northern trade corridor and enhancing Arctic sovereignty.
On June 4, 2026, a significant collaboration was announced between Aecon Group Inc. and Arctic Gateway Group (AGG), aimed at enhancing Canada's northern trade corridor and Arctic sovereignty through infrastructure improvements at the Port of Churchill in Manitoba. The two organizations have formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which sets the stage for exploring various project opportunities related to the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway.Aecon, a prominent player in the construction and infrastructure sector, will leverage its extensive experience to support AGG, an Indigenous and community-owned enterprise. This partnership marks a crucial step toward the development of the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway, with a strong emphasis on creating jobs, training, and opportunities for Indigenous and northern communities. Both companies are committed to ensuring that their collaborative efforts yield substantial benefits for Indigenous and northern businesses.
Jean-Louis Servranckx, President and CEO of Aecon Group Inc., expressed pride in partnering with AGG, highlighting the importance of exploring infrastructure solutions that promote Indigenous-led development and economic reconciliation. He stated, "This collaboration is a nation-building opportunity to transform the Port of Churchill into Canada’s Arctic and Northern gateway, delivering lasting benefits for future generations."
Tim Murphy, Executive Vice President and Chief Strategic Affairs Officer at Aecon, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the potential for the project to create meaningful local and national impacts. Meanwhile, Chris Avery, President and CEO of Arctic Gateway Group, noted that the partnership would enhance AGG’s planning capabilities for modernizing the Port of Churchill, which includes developing new terminals and ensuring the Hudson Bay Railway meets modern industrial standards.
The Port of Churchill holds significant strategic importance as Canada’s only deep-water northern seaport, providing direct access to the Atlantic Ocean and connecting to the continental rail network through the Hudson Bay Railway. AGG operates this critical infrastructure, which is owned by a consortium of 29 First Nations and 12 remote communities in northern Manitoba.
As the partnership develops, Aecon and AGG will focus on maximizing the potential for job creation and community benefits throughout the project lifecycle. The collaboration aligns with both companies' broader goals of fostering Indigenous participation in infrastructure development and economic opportunities in northern Canada.
This initiative not only represents a significant investment in regional infrastructure but also highlights the role of Indigenous communities in shaping the future of Canada’s northern trade routes. The combined efforts of Aecon and AGG aim to ensure that the development of the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway serves as a catalyst for economic growth and reconciliation in the region.
