Alberta Government Bolsters Skilled Trades Program with Additional Funding

The Alberta government has announced an additional $300,000 investment for the BLUprint skilled trades program at TELUS Spark Science Centre, building on previous funding to enhance trades education for youth.

EDMONTON — In a significant move to bolster skilled trades education, the Alberta government has allocated an additional $300,000 to the BLUprint program at TELUS Spark Science Centre, extending its support through 2027. This funding complements the earlier investment of over $880,000 made in 2024, which was instrumental in launching the initial two phases of the BLUprint initiative. These phases introduced engaging outdoor 'try-a-trade' activities and indoor exhibits that feature cutting-edge virtual reality simulators alongside hands-on learning experiences.
The BLUprint program is designed to connect young individuals with the world of skilled trades, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding apprenticeship education and various post-secondary pathways. This initiative is crucial for nurturing the skilled workforce that Alberta requires both now and in the future. As stated in the official release, this program serves as a vital link between trades learning and the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
BLUprint is a collaborative effort between TELUS Spark and the Calgary Construction Association, aiming to provide children and youth with opportunities to delve into the trades. The first phase of the program featured a variety of 'try-a-trade' activities, including a dedicated carpentry corner, a toddler zone for younger visitors, activation carts, and special Maker Mondays that were led by experienced tradespeople.
Construction of phase two commenced in December 2024, culminating in the grand opening of the final New Builder exhibit in June 2025. The initiative has proven to be a success, drawing over 100,000 visitors to date, including more than 40,000 students who have engaged with the program's offerings. This influx of young participants underscores the program's effectiveness in promoting trades education and awareness among the next generation.
The additional funding from the Alberta government not only secures the future of BLUprint but also reflects a broader commitment to enhancing skilled trades education across the province. By fostering early exposure to trades, BLUprint plays a pivotal role in shaping the future workforce of Alberta, ensuring that the province remains equipped with skilled professionals in various trades for years to come.
