BC One Call Limited and the Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia have signed an MOU to enhance excavation safety and protect underground infrastructure in the province.

In a significant move aimed at bolstering worker and public safety, BC One Call Limited (BC 1 Call) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia (IIABC). This partnership is designed to enhance collaboration in various critical areas including excavation safety, damage prevention, and the safeguarding of the province's underground infrastructure. The announcement highlights the importance of excavation practices, particularly as irrigation professionals frequently engage in ground disturbance for the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of underground irrigation systems. Such work often occurs in proximity to vital underground assets, encompassing natural gas, petroleum, electrical, telecommunications, water, sanitary, storm systems, and high-pressure pipelines. The collaboration between BC 1 Call and IIABC will focus on raising awareness about responsible excavation practices and the necessity for informed planning prior to any ground disturbance. Additionally, the organizations aim to advance professional standards, education, responsible irrigation practices, and water stewardship while safeguarding infrastructure. "Every excavation project, regardless of size, carries the responsibility to protect the critical infrastructure beneath our feet. The risks near high-pressure pipelines are particularly concerning in the absence of proper information provided by BC 1 Call," stated Donna Grant, president of BC 1 Call. She emphasized that this partnership is vital in ensuring that irrigation professionals possess the necessary knowledge and resources to excavate safely and protect underground infrastructure, thereby serving the communities effectively. Poshak Sachdeva, executive director of IIABC, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Professional irrigation is about far more than delivering water efficiently; it is about protecting people, safeguarding critical infrastructure, and carrying out every project responsibly. Safety is not simply a regulatory requirement; it is a professional responsibility." Both organizations will collaborate on various initiatives including professional education, conferences, webinars, industry events, public awareness campaigns, educational resources, and stakeholder engagement.
