Calgary Housing has launched its first non-market housing project in Mount Pleasant, featuring 16 mixed-income homes for 45 residents, with a budget of $7.9 million.
In a significant move towards addressing housing needs, Calgary Housing (CH) has officially opened its inaugural non-market housing development, serving as the development manager for the City of Calgary. This project, situated in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood, comprises a total of 16 mixed-income homes intended to accommodate 45 residents. Construction for the initiative commenced in April 2025, marking a proactive step in tackling the housing shortage. The development is strategically located at 2020 6th Street NW, Calgary, in proximity to essential amenities including a small playground, an off-leash dog park, schools, and commercial corridors along 16 Avenue N.W. and Centre Street N.W. These homes are designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating various eco-friendly features and materials that not only require minimal maintenance but also result in energy savings of 24 percent beyond the minimum requirements set by building codes.
Notable elements of the housing units include the installation of solar panels and cold-climate air-source heat pumps, which are supplemented by natural gas furnaces for backup heating. This innovative approach to construction reflects a growing trend towards environmentally conscious building practices in residential developments.
The overall budget allocated for the construction of this project is $7.9 million, which includes a significant contribution of $3.5 million from the Government of Alberta. Of this amount, $1.5 million has been designated through the Affordable Housing Partnership Program, a collaborative funding initiative between the provincial government and the Government of Canada.
This mixed-income development not only aims to provide affordable housing options but also emphasizes the importance of community integration and sustainability. The project's location and design are expected to enhance the neighborhood's appeal while meeting the diverse needs of its future residents. As Calgary continues to grow, such developments are crucial in ensuring that housing remains accessible and inclusive for all citizens.
The completion of the Mount Pleasant Affordable Housing Project is a testament to the ongoing efforts of local authorities to combat housing challenges in urban areas. As more projects like this come to fruition, they will play a vital role in shaping the future of housing in Calgary, paving the way for further investments and developments in the sector.
