Completion of Acute Treatment Area at Royal Inland Hospital Marks Milestone in Major Expansion Project

The Royal Inland Hospital's Teck Emergency Department has completed its acute treatment area as part of a significant expansion project, enhancing patient care and safety.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Interior Health has celebrated a key milestone with the completion of the acute treatment area in the Teck Emergency Department (ED) at the Royal Inland Hospital (RIH). This newly inaugurated section is a critical component of the ongoing RIH Patient Care Tower project, which aims to enhance healthcare delivery in the region. According to a release, the acute treatment area is specifically designed for patients who need urgent care, providing close observation and swift access to necessary tests and treatments.
The upgraded facility boasts an optimized layout that facilitates patient flow and enhances monitoring capabilities. It includes eight examination rooms, a waiting area, two care team stations, a medication room, and a family room that connects to the previously completed mental health and substance use space. Notably, existing treatment spaces have been transformed from curtained bays into fully enclosed rooms, equipped with hand hygiene sinks and sliding doors, thereby improving safety, comfort, and privacy for patients, families, and caregivers.
As renovations progress, the RIH Patient Care Tower Project is entering its final stages, which will see the expansion of the trauma and resuscitation zone within the Teck ED. This phase will introduce two additional trauma bays and two new resuscitation rooms, marking a significant first for the facility. Patients will have access to this enhanced space by spring 2027.
The RIH Patient Care Tower project is a major redevelopment effort that has already seen the completion of the 107-bed Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Patient Care Tower, which opened its doors in 2022. The project also encompasses extensive renovations to existing areas within the hospital. Once all improvements are finalized, the emergency department will grow by approximately 68 percent, increasing its treatment spaces from 47 to 73.
The financial backing for this substantial $490.28 million initiative comes from multiple sources, including the Province of British Columbia, the Thompson Regional Hospital District, and the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. Additionally, local organizations such as the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc, Le7 te Melámen Health Society, and Two Rivers Métis Society have provided support in various capacities throughout the project's lifecycle. The completion of the acute treatment area underscores the commitment to advancing healthcare facilities in the region and improving patient outcomes.
