In a significant development for Canada’s trade infrastructure, joint venture partners Egis and Arcadis have been appointed as the operator's engineer for the ambitious Contrecœur Container Terminal Project at the Port of Montréal, as announced by DP World. This project has been classified as a nation-building initiative, with the potential to transform the eastern trade gateway of Canada and boost the Port of Montréal's annual capacity by an impressive 60 percent. The collaboration between Egis and Arcadis will focus on the comprehensive design and engineering of the terminal infrastructure essential for the new facility's operations. This will encompass a range of structures, including all necessary buildings, the container yard, rail yard, utilities, and truck gates. Egis will take the lead in designing and engineering the terminal's utility buildings, civil utilities, crane rails, pavements, and truck gate infrastructure. Meanwhile, Arcadis will spearhead the environmental assessment, geotechnical engineering, electrical engineering, and the design of the primary operational and administrative buildings of the container terminal. Additionally, Moffatt & Nichol has been engaged as a subconsultant to the joint venture, tasked with providing terminal planning and operational specifications services. Their role will be pivotal in determining the layout of the terminal and optimizing its operations. According to statements from the Government of Canada, this project is expected to support around 4,000 jobs annually during the construction phase and is projected to generate approximately $750 million in annual economic benefits once it becomes operational. The federal government has committed a substantial $1.16 billion in funding through the Canada Infrastructure Bank to support this transformative initiative.
