Excavation Work Commences on Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Stations

Major excavation work is currently in progress on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, focusing on four underground stations in Etobicoke, Ontario.

In Toronto, significant excavation efforts are underway for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE), specifically targeting four underground stations located along Eglinton Avenue West. The stations are situated at key intersections: Martin Grove Road, Kipling Avenue, Islington Avenue, and Royal York Road. This development is part of a broader initiative to enhance public transportation in the region. According to a recent release, the initial phase of construction involves the establishment of station boxes, which form the core underground structures of the stations.
The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will ultimately include a total of seven stations, with additional stops planned at Jane Street, Scarlett Road, and Renforth Drive. Notably, crews have recently completed excavation for the first of two 500-meter tunnels that will connect Pearen Park to Mount Dennis Station. Progress is also being made on the construction of piers intended to support a 1.5-kilometer elevated guideway; as of now, approximately 85 percent of the piers are finished. Furthermore, work is advancing on the bridge decks that will accommodate the transit trains.
Upon completion, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will extend the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) system by an additional 9.2 kilometers, resulting in nearly 30 kilometers of rapid transit along Eglinton Avenue. This extension aims to improve connectivity between Scarborough, Midtown Toronto, and Mississauga, enhancing the overall transit experience for commuters in these areas.
Financially, the project is backed by a substantial investment from the Government of Canada, amounting to approximately $1.87 billion. This investment is part of the Province of Ontario's ambitious $70 billion transit plan, which seeks to modernize and expand public transportation infrastructure across the province. The ongoing construction signifies a critical step toward realizing these transit objectives, as the region continues to prioritize sustainable and efficient transportation solutions.
