Halton Healthcare Initiates Major Expansion to Increase Hospital Capacity

Halton Healthcare is launching a significant expansion project to add 123 new acute care beds across two hospitals, supported by provincial funding. The initiative aims to enhance patient care and reduce wait times in response to the region's growing population.

In a decisive move to enhance healthcare capacity, Halton Healthcare has embarked on a fast-tracked expansion project that will introduce 123 new acute care beds. This initiative includes the addition of 111 inpatient beds at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) and 12 beds at Milton District Hospital (MDH). The primary objectives of this expansion are to improve access to care, minimize wait times, and provide modern private and semi-private patient rooms.
The Ontario Ministry of Health has announced that the OTMH expansion is backed by over $154 million in provincial funding. In addition to the new beds, the project will encompass approximately 79,000 square feet of renovated space, creating around 200 jobs in the region during the construction phase. The expansion will utilize purpose-built but previously unfinished space across three floors of OTMH, specifically the eighth floor of the Centre Block and the third and fourth floors of the North Block, along with one floor at MDH.
Design enhancements will include windows in patient room doors to facilitate visibility and support patient care while preserving privacy. At OTMH, the eighth floor design will also feature additional interior vestibules at both the north and south ends of the building.
The original design of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, which opened in 2015, intentionally included approximately 80,000 square feet of unfinished space across the third, fourth, and eighth floors to allow for future growth. "This project involves completing and activating unfinished, purpose-built 'shelled' space within our existing hospitals rather than constructing a new hospital building," stated Al Coady, senior vice-president of redevelopment, facilities, and retail operations at Halton Healthcare.
The 2026 expansion is being executed as a variation of the existing Design Build Finance Maintain agreement, in collaboration with Parkin Architects Limited and EllisDon, both of whom were integral to the design and construction of the original OTMH. According to the project timeline outlined in a news release, construction is slated for completion by the end of 2027, with the new facilities expected to open to patients in the spring of 2028.
Coady emphasized the importance of strategic planning and investment in hospital infrastructure, stating, "This project is a great example of how thoughtful planning and investment can help us respond quickly to changing community needs. The shelled space was intentionally incorporated into the design of OTMH to provide flexibility for future growth."
Halton is recognized as one of Ontario's fastest-growing regions, particularly among its aging population. According to Halton Healthcare, the number of residents aged 75 and older is projected to double within the next two decades.
