Menkes Developments Ltd. reveals the design of the luxurious Adagio building in Yorkville, which integrates historical elements from a 148-year-old hotel.
Toronto – June 28, 2025 – Menkes Developments Ltd. has provided an exclusive first look at the stunning lobby and amenities of Adagio, a new residential building situated in the vibrant Yorkville neighborhood. This project pays homage to the historical significance of the 148-year-old structure located at 771 Yonge Street, originally established in 1872 by the entrepreneurial couple Elizabeth and Joseph French as a three-storey hotel. The original architectural gem has been carefully preserved and integrated into the new Adagio structure. As a modern architectural masterpiece, Adagio stands out as it rises above Yonge Street, showcasing a design that reflects both innovation and creativity. The architectural firm Giannone Petricone Associates has skillfully captured the essence of the vintage 1872 building, echoing its curved windows in the design of the new building's flowing lines, while the rustic red brick has been restored and incorporated into the new podium.
The historical significance of the site is further enriched by its association with Boris Volkoff, a pivotal figure in Canadian ballet, who operated his studio there from 1930 to 1945. Volkoff was instrumental in training countless dancers and co-founded the National Ballet of Canada, alongside his collaborations with the Canadian Opera Company.
Adagio's lobby features a series of elegant archways that create a sense of rhythm and intimacy, enhancing the boutique-style atmosphere that the design aims to evoke. The interior is adorned with polished black marble walls, accented by striking white veining, brushed brass framed arches, and plush velvet furnishings in soft rose and deep forest green tones.
A unique lighting installation, designed to resemble delicate ballerina tutus, adds whimsy and artistry to the lobby, casting a soft glow throughout the space. Additionally, a centerpiece archival photograph capturing Volkoff's dancers in midflight is highlighted with vibrant colors, celebrating the ballet's legacy while linking it to contemporary urban life.
The amenities at Adagio exude a sense of grace and strength, with rounded features, curves, and arches that mimic the fluidity of ballet. Rich materials and lighting draw inspiration from the Art Deco era, resulting in a timeless and serene aesthetic. Residents can enjoy a range of experiences, from quiet relaxation on the outdoor terrace to social gatherings in the party room or dining room, all designed for effortless enjoyment.
Even pets are catered to with a specially designed pet spa, while a fully equipped fitness center and co-working space round out the luxurious offerings available to residents. Positioned as a modern and elegant retreat in the heart of Toronto, Adagio not only honors the historical legacy of 771 Yonge Street but also promises to redefine upscale downtown living.
