Metro Vancouver Unveils New Housing Data Dashboard to Enhance Regional Planning

Metro Vancouver has launched a new Housing Data Dashboard, designed to provide comprehensive insights into the region's housing market, aimed at improving decision-making among planners and the public.

METRO VANCOUVER — The recently launched Housing Data Dashboard in Metro Vancouver is being recognized as a vital interactive resource that offers a detailed overview of the local housing market and its implications for residents. "As our region continues to grow, access to reliable housing data is more important than ever," stated Metro Vancouver board chair Mike Hurley. He emphasized that the Housing Data Dashboard consolidates crucial information in one accessible location, enabling planners, decision-makers, and the public to grasp trends, pinpoint challenges, and make informed decisions to enhance housing outcomes throughout the region.
Among the significant insights derived from the latest housing data, it was noted that the supply of new housing is increasingly leaning towards higher density, with the majority of housing starts and completions being apartments. Despite a decline in housing starts observed in recent years, the year 2025 saw housing completions reach a record high, attributed to the completion of projects that had commenced earlier in the development cycle.
Additionally, the data revealed that rental vacancy rates hit 3.7 percent in 2025, marking the highest level seen over the past decade. This development has alleviated some of the pressure on rental prices across the region, resulting in a more tempered pace of rent growth compared to previous years.
The newly introduced dashboard takes the place of the long-standing Housing Data Book, which has been in circulation since 2009. The release highlighted that the enhanced accessibility of the dashboard promotes more informed decision-making among local governments, researchers, industry professionals, and community partners. It also aims to advance key objectives outlined in Metro 2050, such as improving housing affordability, increasing supply, and aligning growth with regional planning goals.
Metro Vancouver has been engaged in coordinated regional planning since 1967, and the launch of this dashboard marks a significant step towards utilizing data to better navigate the complexities of housing in a growing urban environment.
