The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada (ACEC) celebrates National Consulting Engineering Day, emphasizing the sector's significant economic contributions and the importance of consulting engineers in delivering vital infrastructure projects across the country.
OTTAWA – The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada (ACEC) is commemorating National Consulting Engineering Day today with a series of initiatives aimed at highlighting the essential role of consulting engineers in the Canadian economy. Among these initiatives are a press conference held at Parliament Hill, a webinar focused on the future of engineering, and a formal proclamation in the House of Commons. The ACEC asserts that there is much to celebrate within Canada’s engineering and design services sector, which is responsible for creating nearly half a million jobs—both full-time and part-time—and contributes approximately $70 billion to the nation’s economy.John Gamble, the president and CEO of ACEC, emphasized the critical nature of infrastructure projects, both large and small, stating, "Infrastructure projects, large and small, form the backbone of our communities, and consulting engineering firms are essential to their delivery." He highlighted the extensive range of projects that consulting engineering professionals are involved in, including roads, ports, water treatment facilities, hospitals, and energy and communications networks.
The ACEC has pointed out that the federal government is committing $115 billion towards infrastructure over the next five years, which includes the establishment of a Major Projects Office aimed at facilitating nation-building initiatives. In addition, the Canada Strong Fund and the Canada Defence Industrial Strategy present what the ACEC describes as a "generational opportunity to build with vision."
Furthermore, consulting engineering is poised to play a significant role in the development of the National Infrastructure Corridor. This ambitious planning endeavor aims to enhance regional corridors already being developed for trade and other purposes, aligning with the government’s One Canadian Economy initiative. Gamble added, "Our firms have the deep knowledge, skills, and innovation we need to turn bold ideas into life-changing realities."
As the world evolves, so too does Canada’s position within it. Gamble concluded by stating, "If ever there was a time to build with vision, this is it." The celebration of National Consulting Engineering Day serves not only as a tribute to the contributions of consulting engineers but also as a call to action for the critical infrastructure developments that will shape the future of Canadian communities.
