Toronto City Council has approved a new public library branch at Quayside, part of a significant housing development, aimed at serving the growing waterfront community.
TORONTO – In a significant development for the city’s waterfront, Toronto City Council has granted approval for a new branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL) at Quayside, a burgeoning community along the eastern waterfront. The announcement follows over a decade of planning efforts by TPL in partnership with the city to enhance library services in this area. According to a recent press release, the new branch is essential to accommodate the community's needs as it expands. "New library branches can take five to 10 years to deliver, so securing space at Quayside now while construction gets underway will help ensure the branch opens alongside the growing community and is ready to serve residents in the years ahead," the release stated. As part of the project, TPL intends to engage in a community consultation process that will allow residents to provide feedback on programming, services, and collections. This consultation phase is set to commence after the selection of an architectural firm for the interior fit-out, with the anticipated start date for this process being 2028. Quayside is poised to be one of Toronto’s most significant housing projects, with the first phase expected to yield around 563 affordable rental homes and 1,170 market rental homes. Notably, approximately 57 percent of the affordable homes will be designed to accommodate families, featuring two, three, and four-bedroom units. The development is being spearheaded by Dream Unlimited Corp. The new library branch is just one component of a larger initiative aimed at enhancing services in the waterfront area. Additionally, plans are in place for a second library branch to be established in Ookwemin Minising, an emerging island community nearby. "By integrating the library into the first phase of development, the branch can be delivered without new tax-supported capital funding from the city," the release further explains. The funding for the base building will be sourced from community benefit contributions, with the developer responsible for delivering the completed base building, land, and access to the city. TPL will take charge of the design, construction, and furnishing of the interior space, ensuring that the library meets the community’s expectations and needs as it continues to grow.
