The Ontario government has announced a $2.2 million investment to boost apprenticeship pathways and modernize skilled trades training in Windsor, benefiting three organizations and preparing 80 individuals for careers in various skilled trades.

In a significant move to bolster the skilled trades workforce, the Ontario government has committed over $2.2 million towards expanding apprenticeship pathways and modernizing training initiatives in Windsor. This investment is aimed at providing essential support to three key organizations, collectively preparing 80 individuals for careers across a variety of skilled trades.
The funding is allocated through two primary programs: the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program and the Apprenticeship Capital Grant. The first organization to benefit from this initiative is Women’s Enterprise Skills Training (WEST), which will receive more than $1.56 million. This funding will facilitate the training of 60 women, focusing on fields such as industrial electrician roles, electrician construction and maintenance, refrigeration and air conditioning, sheet metal work, and cement finishing trades.
St. Clair College stands to gain over $641,000 in total funding. Of this, $291,065 is earmarked for the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program, aimed at training 20 participants, primarily youth and other underrepresented groups, for careers in tool and die making. Additionally, the college will receive $350,000 through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant to enhance its training facilities by upgrading Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining equipment and controls to align with modern industry standards.
The final recipient of the funding is the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers, which will receive $53,720 through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant. This grant will enable the organization to acquire advanced robotic surveying and monitoring technology, further enhancing the quality and efficiency of training provided.
This initiative not only reflects the Ontario government's commitment to fostering a skilled workforce but also highlights the importance of supporting women and underrepresented groups in the trades.
