The Province of Ontario is funding new educational infrastructure in the Niagara Region, including a new school and expansions to existing facilities, aimed at accommodating growing student populations.
The Province of Ontario has announced a significant investment of $78.1 million aimed at enhancing educational infrastructure in the Niagara Region. This funding will facilitate the construction of a new school in Fort Erie and the expansion of three existing schools located in Pelham and Port Colborne, as well as Fort Erie itself. Once completed, these projects are expected to create a total of 897 new spaces for elementary students, 506 new spots for secondary students, and 108 new licensed child care spaces, thereby supporting local families within the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN).The financial backing for these initiatives comes from the Ontario Capital Priorities Program, a governmental initiative designed by the Ministry of Education to bolster the construction of new educational facilities, including permanent additions, renovations, and acquisitions. The allocation of funds is contingent on school boards across Ontario submitting detailed proposals to the Ministry, outlining their urgent accommodation needs. These proposals are subsequently ranked and approved based on criteria such as rising enrollment figures, the condition of existing facilities, and the potential for school mergers or the establishment of joint-use facilities.
Milica Petkovic, the public relations manager for the DSBN, underscored the importance of this funding, stating that the cases submitted by school boards reflect the immediate accommodation needs of students, aligning with the growth strategies outlined in the board’s long-term accommodation framework. The recent confirmation of funding marks a significant step forward in addressing these pressing needs.
This year’s capital investment is part of a broader commitment by the Ontario government, which has pledged over $22 billion over the next decade to facilitate new school construction, renovations, and enhancements across the province. Details of the projects earmarked for funding include the construction of a new elementary school in Fort Erie, estimated to cost $26.4 million, which will accommodate 513 students and provide 49 licensed child care spaces.
Additionally, a $17.2 million expansion is planned for Oakwood School located at 255 Omar Ave. in Port Colborne, which will add capacity for 199 additional students and 49 licensed child care spaces. Glynn A. Green Public School, situated at 1353 Pelham St. in Fonthill, is set to receive a $14.6 million addition, creating space for 185 new students and 10 additional licensed child care spots. Finally, Greater Fort Erie Secondary School at 1640 Garrison Rd. will see a $19.9 million expansion, allowing for an additional 506 students.
Construction timelines for these projects indicate that work is anticipated to commence in the spring and summer of 2027, with Oakwood School's expansion expected to begin first, followed by the other expansions and the new school in Fort Erie. Petkovic mentioned that the DSBN adheres to public sector procurement guidelines, and the projects will soon be advertised for proposals from potential architects.
Kelly Pisek, the director of education at the DSBN, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Ministry of Education. She emphasized that every investment made in educational facilities represents a commitment to the students and communities served by the District School Board of Niagara.
The projects underscore the urgent need for increased educational spaces in response to the region's anticipated population growth. According to the official plan, Niagara is preparing for a minimum population of 694,000 by 2051, which represents an increase of over 200,000 individuals and 85,000 jobs compared to 2021. This demographic shift highlights the critical need for expanded educational infrastructure to keep pace with the growing community demands.
