Sucro Can Canada Unveils New Sugar Refinery at Port of Hamilton

Sucro Can Canada and HOPA Ports celebrate the opening of a $135 million sugar refinery at Pier 15, designed to enhance local food manufacturing supply chains.

HAMILTON, ONT. — Earlier this month, Sucro Can Canada, in collaboration with HOPA Ports, celebrated the official inauguration of its newly constructed sugar refinery located at Pier 15 within the Port of Hamilton. The company initially established its presence at this port with a lease for its first building at Pier 10 back in 2014. The agreement to construct the new refinery at Pier 15 was finalized in 2023, marking a significant development for the company.
Construction of the state-of-the-art facility, which represents an investment of $135 million, commenced in April 2024 and reached completion in April 2026. Designed with the ambition to become Canada’s largest sugar refinery, the facility aims to achieve a refining capacity of up to one million metric tonnes annually as operations scale up.
Strategically positioned at the heart of Canada’s food manufacturing sector, the refinery is within a day’s drive of 142 million consumers. It provides direct access to marine, rail, and highway transportation, which is crucial for efficiently receiving raw sugar by vessel and reliably distributing refined products to food manufacturers across Ontario, Quebec, and the U.S. Midwest. This location is expected to help mitigate the reliance on sugar supply sources that are currently constrained or located far away.
The demand for sugar is on the rise, particularly in Ontario, which hosts one of North America’s most significant clusters for food and beverage manufacturing. The refinery is set to gradually increase its processing volumes year-over-year. During its inaugural year of full operations in 2026, it is projected to receive up to 10 vessels, with that number climbing to approximately 14 vessels in 2027. The facility will continue to expand as additional processing systems are brought online.
Jonathan Taylor, founder and CEO of Sucro Can Canada, expressed pride in the completion of the refinery, stating, “For our team, completing this refinery is a proud milestone. We built this facility to serve customers reliably over the long term. As sugar opportunities continue to emerge, this refinery provides a leading Canadian-based supply alternative that gives food manufacturers greater certainty, choice, and confidence in their supply chains, while creating skilled jobs here in Hamilton.”
Currently, the facility employs around 65 skilled workers, with expectations for employment growth as more processing systems come into operation. The operations at the refinery will include the production of both dry and liquid refined sugar, which will be packaged in industrial formats tailored for food manufacturing clients.
