Team Ontario Shines at Skills Canada National Competition with 38 Medals

Team Ontario achieved remarkable success at the Skills Canada National Competition, winning 38 medals, including 16 golds. The event showcased the talents of youth in skilled trades and technology, with an eye towards future international competition.

TORONTO – The Skills Canada National Competition recently concluded in Toronto, where Team Ontario returned home with an impressive haul of 308 medals. During the closing ceremony on May 30, held after two days of intense competition, Team Ontario celebrated its achievements, securing 38 medals overall: 16 gold, 15 silver, and seven bronze medals. Among the highlights was the presentation of the RBC Best of Region Awards, which recognized competitors from each province and territory who achieved the best weighted scores. For Ontario, the award was bestowed upon Owen Griffin from the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, who triumphed in the Mechanical CAD secondary contest, earning a gold medal. Ian Howcroft, CEO of Skills Ontario, expressed his pride in the competitors, stating, "We congratulate all our competitors for their success. Advancing to the national level of competing is no small achievement, and these young people have worked hard at developing their skills for this event. The future of Ontario is in good hands with these youth who are inspiring others to become skilled trade and technology leaders." Looking ahead, four members of Team Ontario will represent Canada at the WorldSkills competition in Shanghai, China, this September. These competitors include Ethan Almeida from Centennial College, who will compete in autobody repair, Luca Assad from George Brown Polytechnic, who will showcase his culinary skills, and Cole Hunter and Grant Maddock from Humber Polytechnic, who will participate in the mechatronics category. Their participation not only highlights their individual talents but also represents Ontario's commitment to fostering the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
