Trump Announces Construction of Granite Helipad on White House Lawn

President Trump has confirmed the construction of a granite helipad on the White House lawn, aimed at accommodating new Marine One helicopters. The project is privately funded, with an estimated cost of up to $6 million.
In a recent announcement, President Donald Trump revealed plans for a granite helipad on the White House lawn, claiming the installation is necessary to accommodate the new, more powerful Marine One helicopters. The construction project is already underway on the South Lawn, where crews previously erected a temporary arena for a UFC event celebrating Trump's 80th birthday. Trump stated that the helipad would be funded privately and estimated its cost to be as high as $6 million. 'It’s got the seal of the White House on it in granite, in carved granite,' Trump remarked during a press conference in the Oval Office. 'It’s really a beautiful thing.'However, details regarding the timeline for the project’s completion were not disclosed. This initiative marks yet another significant construction effort by Trump, who has sought to reshape the White House to reflect his personal style. According to Trump, the new helipad will be capable of accommodating helicopters that are too powerful for the current landing area, which has been an issue since the delivery of a new fleet of helicopters by Sikorsky Aircraft in 2024. Trump explained that the upgraded helicopters, which replaced the Vietnam War-era models, pose a risk to the lawn due to their powerful exhaust systems, which can scorch the grass.
The president emphasized that the new helicopters cannot be used at the White House without causing damage, stating, 'It’s not that the grass gets discolored — it gets ripped out.' The Marines and Sikorsky have been working for years to resolve this issue, which has led to limited service of the new aircraft at the White House. The Marine Corps aviation plan for 2026 indicates that the older VH-3D helicopters will continue to be in service until the end of the year.
Trump recalled discussions with military generals about the necessity of a helipad, asserting that Sikorsky agreed to cover the full cost of the helipad because they felt 'a little bit guilty' about the limitations of the new helicopters. He described his vision for the helipad, instructing builders to create a beautiful structure using granite rather than opting for a simpler concrete design. 'You’re landing on granite, which is the strongest stone,' he stated, suggesting that the completed pad could also serve other purposes, such as hosting outdoor press conferences.
The construction of the helipad is part of a series of renovations Trump has overseen at the White House, including the controversial removal of parts of the Rose Garden and the renovation of the Palm Room. Previous efforts to modernize the presidential helicopter fleet have faced numerous challenges; the iconic VH-3D Sea King helicopter has been in service since 1978. Efforts to modernize the fleet began under President George W. Bush but were halted due to cost overruns, only to be revived by President Barack Obama, leading to the eventual awarding of a contract to Sikorsky in 2014.
Trump also discussed ongoing renovations to the columns on the north side of the White House, stating that crews have removed about 150 years of paint to restore them. He remarked, 'If you don’t strip the paint off, it gets worse and worse and worse.' The president did not clarify who would be financing the column restoration. Trump concluded by expressing pride in the extensive renovations taking place, saying, 'A lot of love is being put into the White House.'
