Aecon Group Inc. has been awarded a significant contract for the Greenlight Electricity Centre project, enhancing its backlog and addressing growing electricity demands driven by AI and digital infrastructure.
In a major development for the construction and power generation sectors, Aecon Group Inc. (TSX: ARE) announced on July 2, 2026, that it, as part of a consortium with Técnicas Reunidas Alberta, Inc., has secured a multibillion-dollar contract from Greenlight Electricity Centre Limited Partnership. This partnership includes Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, and Kineticor Asset Management. Aecon’s share of the contract is valued at $1.7 billion and is set to be included in its Construction segment backlog for the third quarter of 2026.The contract pertains to the Greenlight Electricity Centre (GLEC) project, located in Sturgeon County, Alberta. This facility is designed to serve as a crucial power generation source, specifically a 932 MW natural gas-fired combined cycle plant, with potential expansion to a capacity of 1,864 MW. The GLEC aims to meet the growing electricity demand associated with a significant data centre development, making it one of the largest new sources of dispatchable power generation in Alberta.
Aecon’s President and CEO, Jean-Louis Servranckx, emphasized the importance of this project, stating that the rapid advancements in AI infrastructure, digital transformation, and economic growth are driving a significant investment cycle in power infrastructure. He noted that the contract underscores Aecon’s multi-disciplinary capabilities in delivering mission-critical infrastructure that supports long-term demand for power generation and grid expansion.
The consortium, TRA, which includes Aecon and Técnicas Reunidas, brings extensive experience in delivering large-scale power generation solutions. Their collaboration will encompass all phases of the project—engineering, procurement, construction execution, and commissioning—ensuring that all partners benefit from the execution of the project. The construction scope will cover civil works, as well as mechanical, structural, electrical, and instrumentation work necessary for the facility's balance of plant, gas metering station, switchyard, and substation.
Construction activities are anticipated to commence in the third quarter of 2026, with the project expected to reach completion by 2030. Thomas Clochard, Executive Vice President and COO of Aecon, highlighted the necessity for world-class expertise to execute such a large-scale project, stressing that Aecon’s experience in complex industrial and power infrastructure projects will be vital for maintaining safety, quality, schedule, and cost performance.
Aecon’s proven track record in gas and power infrastructure includes notable projects such as the TC Energy Napanee Generating Station and the East Windsor Cogeneration and Capital Power Expansion projects. The company has strategically enhanced its capabilities across North America through recent acquisitions, which have bolstered its self-perform solutions and growth potential.
The GLEC project aligns with broader trends in North America, where the demand for electricity is surging due to the accelerating need for AI, digital infrastructure, and electrification. Aecon's involvement positions it favorably within the evolving power landscape, enabling it to harness significant opportunities across the power generation, transmission, and distribution sectors.
Further details about the Greenlight Electricity Centre can be found on its official website. Aecon Group Inc. continues to solidify its role as a leader in the construction and infrastructure development arena, providing integrated solutions for both private and public sector clients.
