Apex Well Servicing has been fined for failing to ensure worker safety, leading to a serious injury incident in Slave Lake.
EDMONTON — Apex Well Servicing (2010) Inc., an oil and gas well servicing company, has been penalized with a fine totaling $144,000 due to a workplace injury incident that took place in early 2024. On June 18, the company entered a guilty plea in the High Prairie Court of Justice, acknowledging one violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Code. This violation relates to the failure to implement necessary safeguards to protect workers from potential injuries caused by objects that could be propelled from machinery or equipment. The incident that prompted these charges occurred on February 5, 2024, at Apex’s operational site in Slave Lake. A worker was engaged in the process of bleeding off air pressure from equipment by loosening a valve using a wrench. Unfortunately, the valve unexpectedly released, resulting in the worker being struck and sustaining serious injuries.
In the court proceedings, the Crown opted to withdraw six additional counts against the company, which highlights the focus on this particular incident and its implications for workplace safety practices within the industry. Following the conviction, both Apex Well Servicing and the Crown have a timeframe of up to 30 days to consider an appeal regarding the conviction or the imposed penalty.
This case underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations and the need for companies in the oil and gas sector to implement robust safety measures. The fine serves not only as a punitive action for the company but also as a reminder to the industry about the potential consequences of neglecting worker safety protocols.
The incident raises concerns about the operational practices at well servicing companies and the necessity for stringent adherence to safety codes to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As the oil and gas sector continues to navigate the complexities of workplace safety, this case may prompt further scrutiny and discussions on improving safety standards across the industry.
