Progress Continues on $2 Billion Athletics Stadium in Las Vegas

The Athletics' new stadium in Las Vegas is on track for a 2028 opening, with significant construction updates and community engagement efforts underway.

LAS VEGAS — Construction of the Athletics' ambitious $2 billion domed stadium on the Las Vegas Strip is advancing, with officials confirming that the project is on schedule for a grand opening before the start of the 2028 season. During a recent meeting of the Las Vegas Stadium Authority, representatives from the team and the construction firms provided an update on the development of the 33,000-seat ballpark.
Tyler Van Eeckhaut, the project director from Mortenson-McCarthy, highlighted the substantial progress made on the lower-suite level of the stadium. He noted, "We’re starting to see a lot of rooms taking shape and a lot of that environment has really started to become a component of the stadium."
A notable milestone was reached with the completion of the buttress work, and the upper deck of the stadium began its construction in April. Additionally, plans for a parking garage on the southeast side of the venue are underway, with an initial phase providing 1,500 parking spots, which will increase to 2,500 upon project completion. However, the Athletics may be required to construct a temporary plaza on the northwest side, as Bally’s Corp. has yet to secure financing for an elevated plaza that is part of an extensive $1.19 billion mixed-use development. This project includes various amenities such as restaurants, shopping, entertainment venues, a hotel-casino, and a 2,500-seat theater, all of which will complement the stadium as part of the overall development plan.
Sandy Dean, vice chairman of the Athletics, explained that the club is actively working on plans to ensure the plaza is operational by the time the first pitch is thrown in 2028. He expressed gratitude to Bally’s for their vision in bringing the team to this location, stating, “We and Las Vegas are all going to benefit by being on the Bally’s site. This is just something we’ve got to sort through together with them in the next little bit.”
During the meeting, Steve Hill, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, requested that the Athletics present a detailed plan regarding the plaza at the next Stadium Authority meeting scheduled for August 20. Hill remarked on the logistical challenges, saying, “In order to facilitate the retail and the parking that you would ultimately need beneath that plaza area, you have to tear that up and build a permanent plaza at some point in the future.”
A’s President Marc Badain announced that the initial batch of suites available for purchase has sold out, and 80% of the season-ticket packages for the seats behind home plate, referred to as the Athletic Club, have already been sold. Badain also indicated that tickets would soon be available for the general public.
To engage with the local community, the Athletics conducted approximately 85 hours of focus-group studies involving 120 residents from the Las Vegas area. While Badain did not disclose specific findings from these studies, he mentioned that feedback regarding the A’s move has been largely positive. “We got their feedback with their experience with (the NHL’s Golden Knights and NFL’s Raiders) and things they love and things they’d like to see maybe a little different in our ballpark,” he said.
The ceremonial groundbreaking for the stadium took place on June 23. Additionally, the A’s Ballpark Experience Center opened in December, allowing fans to explore detailed views of the stadium and participate in immersive experiences related to the new venue.
