Aurora to Transition Blue Box Collection Under New EPR Model by 2026

The Town of Aurora will cease blue box collection beginning January 1, 2026, as part of Ontario's Extended Producer Responsibility model, shifting the responsibility for blue box recycling to producers.

Starting January 1, 2026, the Town of Aurora will implement significant changes to its waste management strategy by discontinuing the collection of blue boxes. This shift is in accordance with the province's new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) model, which mandates that all municipalities in Ontario transition to a producer-led Blue Box program. This initiative is part of the Government of Ontario's new regulations under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling programs across the province.
Under the new framework, producers will bear full responsibility for the costs, operations, and performance associated with Blue Box recycling. This means that the financial and logistical burdens that municipalities have traditionally managed will now shift to the producers of packaged goods. As part of this transition, Circular Materials (CM), a non-profit organization, has been designated to oversee and manage the common collection system for Blue Box materials across Ontario.
CM will be tasked with coordinating the collection of recyclable materials from various sources, including residential homes, residential buildings, and mixed-use properties that have residential areas. This change is intended to streamline the recycling process and improve overall recycling rates in the province.
For residents of Aurora, the current collection of recyclable materials will remain unchanged until December 31, 2025. The Town will continue to collect other waste types, including garbage, green bins, yard waste, Christmas trees, large appliances, and bulky items during this transition period. It is important for residents to stay informed about these changes and to prepare for the new system that will be implemented in a few years.
For further details regarding the Blue Box program and the upcoming changes, residents can visit the official Town of Aurora website at aurora.ca/BlueBox. This site will provide updates and additional information as the transition date approaches, ensuring that the community is well-prepared for the shift in waste management responsibilities.
