Major Electricity Transmission Project Underway in British Columbia

Construction has begun on a significant electricity transmission project in British Columbia that aims to bolster the local economy and support resource development in the region.

Construction has commenced on a significant electricity transmission project in the northern region of British Columbia, a development that both the federal and provincial governments anticipate will inject nearly $10 billion annually into the province's economy. The North Coast Transmission Line, which aims to connect Prince George with Terrace near the North Coast, is set to more than double the electricity supply to this coastal area. This project was referred to the federal Major Projects Office in November 2025 for potential fast-tracking, highlighting its importance in powering major initiatives such as the Ksi Lisims liquefied natural gas facility and mining operations in B.C.'s Golden Triangle close to the Alaskan border.
The first phase of the North Coast Transmission Line includes a 165-kilometre stretch running from Prince George to a point near Fraser Lake. According to a statement from the federal government, this transmission line serves as a crucial foundation for developing the resources of northwestern B.C. The provincial government has also emphasized that the project will help lessen the province's economic dependency on the United States.
Both the federal and provincial governments estimate that the project will create around 10,000 direct, full-time jobs once it becomes operational, with an additional 1,400 jobs expected at peak construction. In July, an agreement was reached between Ottawa and the B.C. government to jointly commit $3.9 billion to the project, which is projected to generate approximately $950 million annually in revenue for provincial and municipal governments.
Premier David Eby, who was present at a groundbreaking ceremony in Prince George alongside federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, stated that this initiative would position British Columbia as the economic engine of a more robust Canada. "The North Coast Transmission Line is a generational project that will facilitate clean growth and provide thousands of jobs for families across B.C.," Eby remarked in a statement prior to the event.
Minister Hodgson described the project as a crucial step towards Canada reclaiming control over its future and successfully executing significant infrastructure projects. He noted that Canadians and international allies are in search of a resilient power grid, essential minerals, liquefied natural gas, and other resources, all of which hinge on the availability of affordable electricity. "The North Coast Transmission Line will supply the clean energy required to unlock B.C.'s world-class mineral deposits, power new processing facilities, and reinforce Canada's status as a reliable global supplier," Hodgson asserted in his statement.
Additionally, the project has garnered support through a loan of nearly $140 million from the Canada Infrastructure Bank, aimed at facilitating BC Hydro's preconstruction work to accelerate the groundbreaking process.
