B.C. Premier Eby Defends Condo Purchase Plan as Affordable Housing Solution

B.C. Premier David Eby and Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a plan to convert unsold condominiums into affordable housing, comparing it to purchasing items on liquidation. The initiative has faced criticism but aims to address housing shortages.

In a recent announcement in Vancouver, British Columbia Premier David Eby, alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney, unveiled a joint federal-provincial initiative aimed at transforming unsold condominiums into affordable housing. Eby likened the strategy to purchasing items on liquidation, emphasizing that it represents a proactive approach to addressing the pressing housing crisis in the province.
Eby and Carney's announcement was part of a broader multibillion-dollar agreement focusing on investments in energy, resources, and transportation. However, the condo purchase plan has drawn significant criticism, with detractors labeling it a bailout for developers struggling to sell their units. In response, Eby expressed a desire to launch the program to demonstrate its merits and alleviate concerns regarding its perceived implications for developers.
"When you buy something that’s on liquidation, you don’t say to yourself, ‘I’m supporting a bailout for the store,’" Eby stated, defending the plan's intentions. He further clarified that there are no plans to purchase unsold units in Vancouver, citing financial impracticalities in converting them into affordable housing.
Prime Minister Carney echoed Eby's sentiments, framing the initiative as a strategic response to capitalize on the current distress faced by some developers. By purchasing these unsold condos, the government aims to convert them into rental units or affordable housing under a rent-to-buy arrangement, providing much-needed options for families.
The plan, which aims to acquire more than 2,000 unsold condos, was initially revealed last month and is included in a broader $5 billion infrastructure spending initiative announced by the federal and provincial governments. This spending is expected to be rolled out over the next decade.
Eby emphasized the urgency of the housing crisis, stating, "This is an opportunity for us to recognize the reality that people can’t wait for housing. We can buy housing at below our construction cost and make it available affordably, and if we don’t do it, someone else will do it."
Carney also noted that the acquisition of these condos would only move forward if it is financially viable. "If those opportunities present themselves — we’ve created the flexibility in order to get affordable housing to people at a cheaper price than could be built — we’ll do it. If the market shifts, if the opportunity doesn’t present itself, then it won’t happen," he clarified.
The condo conversion plan is seen as a pivotal step in addressing the housing shortage in British Columbia, which has been a growing concern for residents and policymakers alike. The government’s commitment to leveraging existing resources to create affordable housing options reflects an acknowledgment of the increasing demand for such solutions in the province.
