Weak Tornadoes Cause Damage in Eastern Ontario
📅 2 weeks ago
A pair of weak tornadoes struck eastern Ontario, causing significant damage but no reported injuries.
In eastern Ontario, a recent weather event has led to the formation of two weak tornadoes, resulting in damage to trees and agricultural buildings. According to researchers from the Northern Tornadoes Project, these tornadoes occurred on June 30, following an afternoon thunderstorm that swept through the region. The first tornado emerged near Verona, traveling southeast for approximately 18 kilometers, impacting areas like Hartington and Harrowsmith. This tornado has been classified as an EF1, with maximum wind speeds reaching around 150 kilometers per hour. The damage was particularly severe, with pieces of barn roofs being hurled into nearby fields, marking it as the most significant destruction noted by the researchers. The second tornado, which occurred in Kingston, was rated at EF0, the lowest classification for tornado intensity. It created a long path of damage primarily affecting trees, extending from Silver Corners to the Canadian Forces Base Kingston. This tornado reached estimated wind speeds of about 115 kilometers per hour. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from either tornado, although the damage to farms and infrastructure was notable.
The occurrences of these tornadoes highlight the unpredictable nature of severe weather in the region and serve as a reminder of the potential risks associated with thunderstorms. The Northern Tornadoes Project continues to study these events to better understand their impact and frequency in eastern Ontario. The findings from this incident will contribute to ongoing research efforts aimed at improving public awareness and preparedness for future severe weather events.
