Denison Mines Gains Support from Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation for Wheeler River Uranium Project

Denison Mines Corp. has secured the support of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation for its Wheeler River uranium project, facilitating progress on environmental approvals and construction.

Denison Mines Corp. has announced that it has received formal consent and support from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation for the advancement of its Wheeler River uranium project, located in northern Saskatchewan. This significant development comes as the company prepares to move forward with its operations, which include the Phoenix and Gryphon uranium deposits. Notably, the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has also taken the step of withdrawing its judicial review application concerning the environmental assessment approval that was granted by the Saskatchewan government for the in-situ recovery uranium mine at the Phoenix site. Construction activities, including site preparation and early works for the Phoenix operation, commenced in March of this year, marking a pivotal phase in the project timeline. Denison Mines is targeting the commencement of first production by the year 2028. The Wheeler River project operates as a joint venture, with Denison acting as the operator and holding a 90 percent ownership stake, while JCU (Canada) Exploration Co. Ltd. retains the remaining 10 percent stake in this venture. This collaboration underscores the importance of partnerships in advancing resource projects within the region, particularly in the context of Indigenous relations and environmental stewardship. The backing from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation not only facilitates the project’s progression but also highlights the growing trend of Indigenous communities actively engaging in resource development decisions that affect their lands and rights.
