The City of Oshawa officially opens Veterans Square, a new public space featuring a performance platform and a tribute to local veterans.
Oshawa, Ontario – The City of Oshawa recently marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of Veterans Square, a new urban space designed to enhance the downtown area and pay homage to the city's military history. The official opening ceremony took place at the northeast corner of Bond Street East and Simcoe Street North, where the square introduces a variety of features aimed at enriching community engagement and aesthetic appeal.Among the highlights of Veterans Square are newly constructed sidewalks and streetscape furnishings, alongside the planting of new boulevard trees along Simcoe Street. The square also boasts a large shade structure that covers a performance and sitting platform, providing a versatile space for community events and gatherings.
In addition to the performance area, the design incorporates perimeter concrete seat walls that come equipped with integrated bench tops, circular bench seating, and accessibility seating options. These features are intended to create a welcoming environment for all visitors.
The landscaping of Veterans Square includes four expansive planting beds filled with ornamental flowering shrubs, pollinator perennial beds, and a mix of coniferous and deciduous shade trees, enhancing the natural beauty of the area. A key artistic element of the square is the striking sculpture named "Kaleidoscope," crafted by Canadian artist Nicholas Crombach, which serves as a focal point and adds cultural significance to the space.
The naming of the square as ‘Veterans Square’ honors Oshawa's deep-rooted connection to Canada’s military past and its proximity to the Colonel R.S. McLaughlin Armoury. This name was officially approved by the city council as a tribute to the service and sacrifices made by local veterans, both past and present.
The development of Veterans Square is part of a broader initiative to revitalize Oshawa’s downtown area and create inviting public spaces that foster community interaction. The project, which received a budget allocation of $2.2 million, is expected to serve as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike, enhancing the vibrancy of the downtown district.
As Oshawa continues to evolve, projects like Veterans Square underline the city’s commitment to honoring its heritage while providing modern amenities for community use. The opening of this new public space marks a significant step forward for the city’s urban development efforts, offering a blend of historical reverence and contemporary design.
