Federal Government Allocates Over $25 Million for White Rock Pier Reconstruction Phase Two

The federal government is investing more than $25 million into the second phase of the White Rock Pier reconstruction, addressing significant safety and structural concerns following damage from a winter storm in 2018.

In a significant move for the community of White Rock, British Columbia, the federal government has committed over $25 million through the Build Communities Strong Fund for the second phase of the reconstruction of the White Rock Pier. This pier, situated in Semiahmoo Bay, is not only a vital piece of infrastructure but also holds substantial cultural and historical significance for the area. The pier suffered extensive damage during a severe winter storm in 2018, which resulted in the destruction of a 100-meter section. Currently, the remaining two-thirds of the structure are nearing the end of their service life, prompting the need for a complete replacement to comply with modern seismic safety standards.
The upcoming phase two of the project aims to replace the aging timber structure with a more robust and resilient design. This upgrade is crucial for enhancing the pier's ability to withstand harsh weather conditions and marine environments, ensuring its longevity and safety for future use. In addition to the structural improvements, the project will foster collaboration with the Semiahmoo First Nation, focusing on the preservation of cultural and historical aspects related to the site, as well as providing storage for fishing boats.
Further enhancements planned for the pier include the addition of a new ramp that will provide improved access from the upper intertidal beach to the north end of the pier. This accessibility upgrade is expected to facilitate not only pedestrian use but also support emergency vehicle access through expanded landing space. Moreover, the project will incorporate embedded utility conduits, ensuring the maintenance of essential services during and after emergencies, which is critical for the safety and functionality of the area.
The investment in this iconic landmark reflects the federal government's commitment to revitalizing community infrastructure and fostering resilience against climate impacts. As the project progresses, it is anticipated to provide both immediate and long-term benefits to the local community, enhancing safety while preserving the cultural heritage of the Semiahmoo First Nation and the broader population of White Rock.
