Manitoba Government Advances $90 Million in Road Construction Projects

The Manitoba government is advancing multiple road construction projects worth over $90 million, focusing on improving travel reliability and safety in northern Manitoba.

The government of Manitoba has announced significant progress on various construction initiatives throughout the province, collectively exceeding $90 million. A key development includes the advancement of design work for an $88 million project aimed at upgrading two segments of Provincial Road (PR) 283 that run from The Pas to the Saskatchewan border. This initiative is intended to enhance travel reliability in the northern Manitoba region.
The project encompasses nearly 40 kilometers of roadway between the Saskatchewan border and Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 10. Specifically, it includes approximately 22 kilometers extending from the border to PR 282, and an additional 18 kilometers from PR 282 to PTH 10. According to the government’s announcement, the planned improvements will feature bituminous reconstruction, embankment enhancements, safety upgrades, culvert replacements, and better access management.
Construction on the initial segment, which stretches from PR 282 to PTH 10, is projected to commence in 2027. The Manitoba government has prioritized this segment, while evaluations are ongoing for options near the Knapp Dam. The province has committed to providing further updates as the design work continues.
In addition to the major PR 283 project, the Manitoba government is allocating nearly $4.8 million towards various road projects in The Pas and its vicinity. These improvements will include safety enhancements to PTH 6 and necessary repairs to PTH 60 at the intersection with PTH 10.
Furthermore, enhancements to PTH 2 are also in the pipeline, with this project currently in the design phase. The government anticipates releasing an invitation to tender this fall. The construction on this section of PTH 2, which spans approximately 22 kilometers from the west junction of PTH 21 to two kilometers west of Provincial Road 250 in Souris, is also expected to begin in 2027.
Additionally, a shoulder restoration project is slated for approximately 20 kilometers along PTH 2, starting from its intersection with PTH 83. This effort has an estimated budget of $350,000 and aims to improve overall roadway conditions. The Manitoba government continues to emphasize the importance of these infrastructure projects for enhancing safety and reliability on provincial roads.
