On July 10, 2026, Mayor Olivia Chow awarded the prestigious Key to the City to Jack Oliveira, a prominent labour leader, in recognition of his unwavering commitment to workers' rights and his pivotal role in fostering community strength across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. The ceremony took place at Downsview Park during the annual Retiree Day BBQ hosted by the Labourers’ International Union (LiUNA) Local 183.Oliveira, who emigrated from Portugal to Toronto in 1972, began his career in the construction sector shortly thereafter. He became a member of LiUNA Local 183 in 1984 and subsequently ascended to the position of Business Manager. Under his guidance, Local 183 has evolved into the largest local construction union in North America, representing over 70,000 members. His tenure has been marked by significant advances in workers' rights, with a strong emphasis on ensuring safe working conditions, robust employment protections, and essential services for union members.
Throughout his career, Oliveira has been a staunch advocate for working families and community development. He has initiated and supported numerous programs aimed at aiding workers, newcomers, and marginalized communities, thereby enhancing the quality of life for many in Toronto.
